The Importance of Self-Care

We all have days when we feel overwhelmed and stressed out, but taking a few moments for self-care can help us manage our emotions and stay focused. Self-care is an important part of our overall wellbeing, and can help us build resilience to stress.

What is Self-Care?

Self-care is the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, particularly during periods of stress.

Activities that help to maintain physical, mental, and emotional health are considered to be self-care. While self-care will look different for everyone—a deliberate effort to take care of oneself is important to living a healthy and balanced life.

The Benefits of Self-Care

Studies have shown that self-care improves physical and mental health. Self-care helps to increase energy, motivation, self-awareness and self-confidence.

Practicing self-care has been clinically proven to eliminate or reduce depression and anxiety, decrease stress, increase happiness, and more. A self-care routine can make you more adaptable to changes, build stronger relationships, and bounce back from trials.

Surveyed Americans concluded the benefits of self-care as: enhanced self-confidence (64%), increased productivity (67%), happiness (71%). But there are also physical benefits such as reduced heart disease, stroke and cancer.

Examples of Self-Care

Self-care can come in many different forms. Types of self-care fall into three categories: emotional, physical, and spiritual.

Examples of emotional self-care include setting boundaries by saying no to things that cause extra stress, positive self-talk, taking a relaxing bath, or getting together with a friend.

Physical self-care can be things such as prioritizing sleep, meditating, doing yoga or some other physical activity you enjoy, or choosing to eat nutritious and healthy meals. For some, improving their appearance is a form of self-care.

Activities such as attending a religious service, spending time in nature, serving others, meditating, or keeping a gratitude journal are examples of spiritual self-care.

How to Incorporate Self-Care Into Your Life

When it comes to incorporating self-care into your life, make sure you set aside time each day just for self-care activities. Find activities that you enjoy and make them a priority. Make sure to get enough sleep and rest.
