The Differences Between Botox, Dysport & Jeuveau

As we age, taking care of our skin, using good products on our face and maintaining a healthy diet with plenty of water may not be enough to prevent wrinkles. Injectables are an excellent, non-surgical way to smooth out skin for a more youthful appearance and add lost volume to areas in our face. Injectables are chemical substances ‘injected’ in specific areas of our face. These injectables can reduce the signs of wrinkles and even help contour parts of the body. Injectables may have been considered taboo in the past, but now, almost 2.5 million injectable procedures are performed every year.

Injectables are split into two categories: neuromodulators and soft-tissue fillers. Neuromodulators focus on reducing lines caused by facial movement. Soft-tissue fillers are used to increase volume lost with age in areas like the cheeks, lips, chin, and forehead. The most common neuromodulators are products like Botox®, Dysport® and Jeuveau®. Each one has been used for smoothing out skin for months at a time.

Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau all contain botulinum toxin type A as their active compound, and are all FDA approved to treat the same aesthetic concerns. However, because they are formulated differently, they vary slightly in the dosage used; how much they spread once injected; and how quickly they provide results.

To most people, these differences won’t matter but for those who receive neuromodulator injections often, they may want to understand the differences.

Botox

Botox is by far the most common neuromodulator. The active ingredient in Botox, “Botulinum toxin A,” works by blocking the interaction between nerve and muscle cells resulting in fewer smoother-looking skin. Botox is most known for treating forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet. Botox typically takes about 5 to 7 days for results to appear and will last about 3 to 4 months.

Dysport

Dysport is used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). Dysport injections are made up of the active ingredient abobotulinumtoxinA. Typically healthcare providers need to use more Dysport as compared to Botox, but Dysport is used for larger areas. Dysport is generally the most affordable option out of the three, followed by Botox and then Jeuveau. Most people using Dysport start to see results in about 2 to 4 days lasting for about 4 months.

Jeuveau

Jeuveau, also known as “Newtox,” is believed to last longer than Dysport and Botox, but there is still not enough research to confirm this. Jeuveau uses botulinum toxin type A and works similarly to Botox and Dysport temporarily blocking neurological signals to muscles.

Jeuveau has become a popular alternative to Botox because of its low cost. The true cost of an injection will vary depending on many factors, but Jeuveau treatments can cost less than Botox injections because of Jeuveau’s rewards program. One thing to keep in mind is that Jeuveau is only approved for cosmetic applications, including the treatment of wrinkles and frown lines but Botox is approved for both cosmetic and medical applications. Jeuveau takes about 3 to 5 days for results to appear, and lasts about 3 to 4 months.
